If your water comes from a private well, then you’re well aware of the problems that come with hard water. But the truth is, even if you don’t live on a private well, you may have hard water and not even know it. Since the EPA does not monitor hard water, it’s up to you to control the hardness or softness of your water. When rain falls down, the water is completely pure and void of anything dangerous. However, as it flows through the ground, it can collect minerals such as calcium and magnesium. While this is not necessarily harmful to your physical health, it can cause some serious issues in your house and be uncomfortable to live with. Fortunately, owning a water softener to take these minerals out of your water can easily fix this problem. Here are some benefits of owning a water softener, coming from an experienced plumber:

  • Cost. Hard water can cause serious damage to your pipes, leading to more problems in your appliances throughout the home, such as your dishwasher, laundry machines, ice makers, coffee makers, water heaters, and more. This will cause not only higher energy bills in order to keep these appliances running, but also some major repair/replacement bills for these appliances. A water softener will completely eliminate this issue.
  • Softer Hair and Skin. Hard water can leave scum and residue wherever it goes, including your hair and your skin. This residue is not soluble with your shampoos and soaps, making it less soft and clean whenever you bathe. It can also strip your hair and skin of its natural oils. The soft water from your water softener will restore the oils, balance its pH levels, and keep everything from feeling dry, brittle, and irritated.
  • Laundry. Like the effect hard water has on your hair and skin, it can also cause some damage to your laundry. Hard water will cause your clothes to fade faster, and can also dinge up your whites. Soft water will keep your brights bright and your whites white, and will dissolve your detergents much more effectively, keeping your clothes cleaner and softer.
  • Dishes. One of the places you’ll see the biggest effects of hard water is your dishes. Putting your dishes through the dishwasher with hard water will make it harder to clean dishes, and leave that off, cloudy appearance on your dishes and glasses. This is a direct result of the minerals in hard water. A water softener will remove the minerals creating this problem.
  • Taste. To put it simply, soft water tastes better. You can drink soft water straight from the tap and it will taste pure and clean. This will also affect the way your dishes that you cook with soft water taste!
