A Short Guide to the Different Phase Converter Types

What’s a phase converter? Why is it so vital to machinery? Are you’re wondering what all the fuss is about these phase converters?

Surprisingly enough, they’re forms of motor energy machines that minimize the use of energy during work. They convert a single line of power into a three-phase energy solution. Isn’t that great?

Are you looking to power your drill? Your table saws? Milling machines or hydraulics? You’re in the right place. Learn about the different types of phase converters and their uses in the comprehensive guide below.

Phase Converter Types

The purpose of these phase converters is to equally distribute energy across the three lines of voltage, to allow for faster, and more even distribution of power.

The third sin wave is much cleaner than the usual motor drives, hence why their electric circuitry supersedes anything else.

These phase converters are in three different types, namely;

● Rotary
● Static
● Digital

We’ll look at them in details below.

1. Rotary Phase Converters

This the most common kind of converter because of their versatility and universal reach. The power source originating from a single platform is evenly spread in three pathways to support various types of machinery like hydraulics and pumping systems.

The parts of this converter include two crucial components, the generator which produces the central power by a rotating motion. And the control unit that manages the circuitry. As the generator spins, the action will cause the 3rd line to emerge, together with other two-phase lines and there comes the three-phase converter.

This type of converter has a grip on the load, either motor, resistive, or inductive. When the panels open and shut the circuit for a balance of power, the converter provides a consistent source of energy.

The rotary converter can further be subdivided into other three types;

I. Standard phase converter

This is a pretty basic kind which features the same one to three power source mechanism. The circuit controls are managed digitally making them suitable and economical. They work best for table saws or other metal works.

II. Digital phase converter

This type is built more intense for high inertia motor loads. Even though it can’t handle all other three loads, its motor generation, and electric circuitry adds an excellent boost to the tool. They work best for fans, pumps, blowers, and other smaller machinery.

III. Rotary converter control panels

The final kind of rotary phase converters is the control panel. This kind needs additional equipment like the motor to function effectively. It only features the joints for input and output, capacitors, and motor systems. The idle engines have to be added by the user.

The digital phase converter under rotary includes some of the best technological advances the industry has to offer. It has added safety and security measures. They also include voltage sensitization, which is great for running various loads at the same time.

These products are an excellent choice for electronic equipment, CNC motors, and other heavy machinery.

2. Static Phase Converters

This is a slower phase converter which only runs about 70% the entire capacity. Even though it redistributes energy from a single power source, it’s only great for a startup. The best attributes about this kind are the efficiency costs on the machine, the effortless installation, and quick wiring.

The static phase converter will produce enough energy for the first load of the machinery. Which is why it only contains the motor starting capacitors and starting relays. The function of the motor is to charge up the machine by sending electric waves on the third sine wave.

Once the load begins to run, the capacitors will quickly disconnect, leaving the power phase derailed off its 3rd wheel. This is why it’s not as powerful as the rotary. And also why it cannot maintain constant energy production.

The static converter has two subtypes as well;

I. Standard Heavy Duty

A classic three-phase motor used for light to medium range loads. Though more robust than the high low, this kind can only handle so much.

II. High Low Horsepower

The horsepower on this motor is slightly lower than 330 volts. It’s a two in one unit which allows for limitations of the power settings.

Both phase converters provide low energy for your machinery regardless of being heavy-duty or high low. They are more of a support feature than the whole power source to a piece of machinery.

3. Digital Phase Converters

These types of converters don’t exist on their own. Combines especially with the rotary type, it allows for electric circuitry to the converted easing up the running of the load.

Most of these converters have switches to control their power transmission.

This is an economic and safety requirement for many industries. For example, for industrial companies, these digital phase converters allow for minimizing of energy costs while maintaining the work efficiency.

Applications of Phase Converters

Since these converters are majorly used under manual labor, there have significant uses. Their applications will highly depend on the type of work because some need constant powering throughout the work, while others require a boost at the start only.

Woodwork – as mentioned above, this activity is primarily supported by the rotary converter. They require consistent energy sources for cutting, joining, planning, and molding.
Metalworking– the rotary converter will be in charge of the press breaks, sheets, and mills.
Industrial works – the cranes, compressors, and welders need rotary uniform operations.
Food and service – fans, ovens, and mixers can use either the static or the rotary phase.
Agricultural– grain dryers and pumps need major boosting, hence suitable to use the rotary converter.

Most applications will use the rotary converter because of its ability to maintain sufficient power source throughout the work period.

Power Up Your Machinery

You must be fascinated with the energy solutions you’ve read above. A phase converter doesn’t only aid you to save up on energy; it also allows you to have greater control and power over your machines. They’re practical and efficient for all your hard works.
