Why You Should Plan Your Deck In The Winter…

Spring is coming faster than you realize…

You may be considering a deck build in the spring. There are actually MANY good reasons to consult with a construction company over the winter to begin the whole process before spring arrives.

Carpe Your Diem…

Why Now Is The Time To Act…

If you’ve had any experience with construction on your house, you’ll remember the various hoops you had to jump through to get all appropriate building permits AND align all contractors together.

Building a deck for your home doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require minimal planning.

Building a deck in some cases is no less complicated than remodeling your kitchen or bathroom. People often think there is not much to it, but the complexity of the planning phase is contingent upon the complexity of the request. Some homeowners have grand schemes for deck lighting, four-season partitions, and custom materials. You should absolutely receive the deck of your dreams, but you need to add a comparable amount of lead time to the number of elements at play in your design. There’s also an issue of availability. For those of us who live and work in four season environments, summers fill up with projects quickly. Scheduling a deck build while there’s still snow on the ground is an excellent way to get ahead of the curve so you can both build and enjoy your deck in the same season.

Dig Your Foundations While The Ground Is Still Cold…

Counter intuitive though it may be, once spring arrives in full swing the ground becomes soggy. All of that water that was frozen is now liquid, mixing with the ground you’d like to use as your foundation. This means digging foundations becomes messy and more difficult, and concrete can take longer to correctly cure. Getting a construction team ready to go for the build can mean the difference between digging in solid ground in early spring and soggy ground in late spring. If you’re pushed into late spring, this can add days to the initial process, which consequently shifts schedules into the future. Don’t delay in getting the initial ball rolling – you’re going to want to get your project on the books asap!

Get Out Of Your Way…

One component of the building process we experience time and time again is that we don’t anticipate the interruptions our own lifestyles add to the equation. Whether you’re trying to renovate a basement or build a fence, the amount of your own mental investment necessary will likely double or triple by the time you reach the finish line. It is a testable fact that the number of interruptions in a typical household tend to exponentially increase over the summer months, so doing the mental work during the colder days of the year can actually grease the gear wheels of your project much better than if you leave everything up in the air until the actual construction date.

Consider Your Building Permits…

This is probably the least anticipated part of building a deck. What building permits you do or do not need are completely contingent upon the scope of your project. We are more than happy to help you navigate this often confusing landscape as we have excellent working relationships with many of the inspectors in our area, but you’ll want to expect permit approvals on average to take between 3 and 6 weeks. This means, even if you’ve planned everything out by the end of March, you may not be able to start actual construction until the middle of May. The longer you prolong this step, the more backed up your plans will become. If you’re unsure of what permits you may need, we’d love to sit down with you and help you build a custom strategy.

With fairly minimal planning you can easily avoid a lot of the time-sucking pitfalls that happen during most construction projects. We’d love to craft a tailor-made plan, just for you! Give us a call today at  (574) 210-5951
