Surely, it comes as no surprise to hear that water leaks are dangerous. For instance, you probably know that they can cause damage to your building and invite a health-impairing mold infestation.

But there are many other frightening issues caused by water leaks that you may not be aware of. Specifically, these leaks can contaminate your water supply and increase the risk of a house fire. And let’s not forget the damage all this does to your finances.

The fact is, water leaks are much more hazardous than most people think. For your own safety, read on to learn what dangers await you if you wait too long to repair a water leak.

1. STAINS AND COSMETIC DAMAGE

Stains and other water damage are not the first unpleasant consequence caused by water leaks. But they’re probably the first one you’ll notice.

These usually start as dirty, unsightly blemishes on your walls and ceiling. Over time, the leak deteriorates the wood, drywall, and other materials your home is made of.

Also, any of your possessions that lie along this path of destruction may become water damaged, too. That includes wall art, couches, and display cases/bookshelves (plus the items stored on these shelves).

2. STRUCTURAL DAMAGE

As mentioned, water damage is usually only noticeable if it’s been going on for a while. That means that the structure of your home beneath these surface stains have been deteriorating for some time.

Such damage can be extremely dangerous depending on where it takes place. For example, ceiling joints, wall framing, and other building components are vital to the structural integrity of your home. If these become damaged, your house can literally, and dangerously, start falling apart.

3. MOLD AND MILDEW

Water damage from leaks also creates prime conditions for mold and mildew growth. Then, you’ll have two destructive forces eating away at your home. This infestation will also spread.

Not only that, a mold infestation can cause a slew of respiratory/allergic symptoms to those in your household.

4. CONTAMINATED WATER

Another concern is that water leaks work both ways. That is, while water is leaking out of the pipe, contaminants could work their way into your water supply. Then, the water you drink and bathe in could be tainted by dirt, rust, mold, germs, and other harmful pollutants.

5. INCREASED RISK OF FIRE

The wiring in your home can also deteriorate due to water leaks. And we all know what can happen when the exposed wires contact each other or the water itself. Namely, this could spark an electrical fire.

6. FINANCIAL DAMAGE

Each point on this list comes with its own, separate repair cost. And the longer the damage goes on, the more expensive it is to repair. Additionally, the leaked water will increase your monthly water bill.

The good news is, this means that you can save money by noticing and fixing these issues early on. And some of these problems, like mold infestation, can be prevented entirely if they’re addressed quickly enough.

This may be a minor concern compared to the other hazards on this list. But then, most of us don’t have a lot of money to spare these days.

PREVENT THESE DANGERS BY FIXING WATER LEAKS RIGHT AWAY

If you notice any damage caused by water leaks, don’t hesitate to get it repaired. Fix these problems now before they become dangerously worse.
