The All On Four dental implant technique revolutionized dentistry in the 1990s. For the first time, patients with low bone density were able to get dental implants safely and securely.

But this is just one of the many types of dental implants available to patients.

Whenever you lose one or more teeth as an adult, you can feel a wave of emotion. Will you ever be able to restore your smile and return to the way you once were? Maybe you know about dental implants, but how much do dental implants cost?

In this article, we will walk you through everything you need to know about dental implant treatment, types of dental implants, and how to schedule dental surgery near you.

What Is a Dental Implant?

The dental implant is a fantastic cosmetic dentistry tool used to help restore the anatomy and function of one or more lost teeth. You can choose to get individual tooth implants or replace an entire set or row.

Dental implants involve inserting a titanium screw into the underlying jaw or maxilla. After the screw has been embedded into the bone, an implant can be placed on top of the post that is sticking out. This allows for a very natural placement that makes it look like you never lost a tooth at all.

How Much Do Dental Implants Cost?

Cost is often one of the first considerations patients have when thinking about getting dental implants.

Whether or not dental implants are desired because of decay, cavities, more acute trauma to the mouth, the cost is generally the same.

The cost is typically a little bit higher than the cost of veneers or other individual tooth procedures. In Australia, the price for a typical straightforward dental implant can be in the range of $3000 to $6000 per tooth.

If there are additional procedures being performed at the same time like a sinus lift or a bone graft, this can hike the price up to over $10,000. Many dentists can work with you to create a discount that allows you to choose an appropriate payment plan.

However, if you need to have a full row of teeth replaced, you should make significant financial plans for this well in advance. Depending on the need, you may be able to seek out external funding from family members, health funds, or your health insurance to cover the cost.

Am I A Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

If you are a healthy person with good oral hygiene, you are likely a good candidate for a dental implant in the event of tooth loss.

You’ll need to have healthy gums with good bone density to help hold the implant in place. It may take months before the metal has embedded itself into the bone. Patients who have osteoporosis or other bone density disorders should consult a dentist to see what options are available to them.

Patients who have other medical comorbidities like diabetes or high blood pressure may be at increased risk of complications and should consult a dentist as well.

Patients who smoke will need to reduce or ultimately quit smoking to undergo the procedure.

As a specific note, previously patients with diabetes were advised not to get dental implants. However, this guideline has changed. Now, patients who have well-controlled blood sugar can undergo the procedure safely according to the literature.

How Is the Dental Implant Procedure Performed?

Dental implant surgery requires a dedicated team of skilled dentists. It can be a complex procedure depending on the baseline health of your mouth and your treatment goals.

The general procedure starts by preparing a titanium root implant. This implant goes into the socket where the tooth was originally.

It takes approximately 12 weeks for the gums to surround this piece of titanium and let the root grow in.

After the titanium root has been placed, a connecting post is attached on top to the root. This is called an abutment. The abutment serves to attach the new tooth to the root.

Finally, the artificial tooth replacement that is matched to your anatomy is placed on top of the abutment and by extension, fixed to the root.
