What does the Bible say about forgiveness is a question posed by many I have met over the years. Bible Verses about forgiveness? There are well over 100 mentions of the word forgiveness all throughout the Bible.

Mark 11:25, “And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”

God gets right to the point in saying before you ask for His forgiveness, you must show compassion and mercy for your neighbor in first forgiving their sins against you.

Read on because we will go into great detail on what the Bible says about forgiveness and what forgiveness from God Almighty means in and for your life!

Why We Feel The Need To Be Forgiven

Because we are all sinners.

Moreover, no one knows the hearts of men more than God.

Jeremiah 17:10, “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

God knows we need to be forgiven because He created us.

You have experienced the feeling of guilt on more than one occasion during your life.

Guilt is meant to help you make a morally upright decision.

God, who created you, knows all things and knows where and when sin will come into your life.

Which is why His Forgiveness is a Gift, the Greatest Gift, Salvation and Forgiveness of Sin through the blood of Jesus Christ!

No one knows the burdens we bear more than Christ.

Matthew 11:28-30, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am lowly and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

You and every person has the freewill, given you by God, to choose to accept or reject God’s forgiveness.

There is only one unforgiveable sin in God’s eyes.

Bible Verses About Forgiveness

God instructs us on forgiveness many times throughout the Bible.

Moreover, when God mentions something more than once, He is wanting to command our attention!

Micah 7:18-19, describes the love, compassion and mercy of Almighty God toward us, all of His creation.

“Who is a God like you, forgiving iniquity and passing over rebellion for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not hold on to his anger forever because he delights in faithful love.”

Forgiveness through Christ was God’s plan all along, because He loves us.

In truth, this is why Jesus Christ, The Messiah was foretold all throughout The Old Testament.

The Greatest Example of Forgiveness

There is no greater and loving example of forgiveness than this.

Luke 23:34,“And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments.”

We (mankind), nailed God to a cross and yet He forgave us and continues to forgive us!

There is no greater love, because Jesus, who is God, is without sin and yet, He took our place and carried our sins with Him to the cross, so that we, so that you would live forever.

2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Moreover, because of His sacrifice, on the cross, God can now forgive us sinners.

All we need to do is to accept Jesus Christ as Our Lord and Savior.

Bible Verses About Forgiveness Of Others

How many times should I forgive someone?

What the Bible says about forgiveness and how often, is best understood here.

Matthew 18:21-35, Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times.” 

God teaches us about this in The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant.

“Therefore, the kingdom of heaven is like a king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants. As he began the settlement, a man who owed him ten thousand bags of gold was brought to him.

Since he was not able to pay, the master ordered that he and his wife and his children and all that he had be sold to repay the debt. At this the servant fell on his knees before him. ‘Be patient with me,’ he begged, ‘and I will pay back everything.’ The servant’s master took pity on him, canceled the debt and let him go.”

The servant fails to heed God’s commandment of loving others.

“But when that servant went out, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred silver coins. He grabbed him and began to choke him.

‘Pay back what you owe me!’ he demanded. “His fellow servant fell to his knees and begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay it back.’  “But he refused.  Instead, he went off and had the man thrown into prison until he could pay the debt.

When the other servants saw what had happened, they were outraged and went and told their master everything that had happened. “Then the master called the servant in. ‘You wicked servant,’ he said, ‘I canceled all that debt of yours because you begged me to. Shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’  

In anger his master handed him over to the jailers to be tortured, until he should pay back all he owed.

This is how my heavenly Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

Serving God Begins With Forgiving Others, because He first forgave you.

You must love all and that includes those who have wronged you.

Matthew 5:43-48, “You have heard that it was said, Love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven. For he causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.

For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don’t even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what are you doing out of the ordinary? Don’t even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
