Warning Signs That Your Home Might Need Slab Foundation Repair

Every property is at risk of foundation damage. This can be caused by a variety of factors, from settlement and soil issues, to wall cracks and rough weather. However, since your home’s foundation is buried underground, it can be more than a little tricky to spot a problem. If you don’t get things fixed early then the damage will keep getting worse- and could end up costing you tens of thousands of dollars to fix. On the other hand, if you know what to look for, then you can arrange slab foundation repair before it’s too late- and that’s why we’re here to help. Read on to discover some of the early warning signs of foundation damage. If you see any of these in your home, then it’s best to be on the safe side and get an expert to look things over for you from Crown Leveling Inc.

Indoor warning signs of foundation damage

Over time, houses settle into the soil, so a little bit of unevenness isn’t anything to worry about. When the problem starts to get a bit more serious, though, then it could be time to get things checked over, to see if you might need slab foundation repair. First things first, check your doors and windows. If doors start to jam frequently or won’t close properly, then the issue could be down to a fault in your foundation. The same thing goes for windows, especially if they suddenly go from being easy to open and close to a bit stiff. Since doors and windows act as focal points for foundation damage to spread to, you should also keep an eye out for any cracks in the walls around them, too.

Take a look at the exterior of your home

Of course, those indoor warning signs of foundation damage are one of the early signs of a foundation that needs slab foundation repair. To catch the issue earlier, you’ll want to check if your foundation is standing nice and straight by sighting down the foundation wall from each corner. Ideally, all the walls should be completely straight, without any lean. You should also use a straight level to double check that everything is as it should be. If there’s any bulging or curving in the foundation wall, then this could be a sign that the foundation itself is starting to shift- usually as a result of the soil around it putting pressure on the concrete. If that’s the case, then you’ll need slab foundation repair to stop the problem from getting any worse.

Check the concrete for any weaknesses

If your home was built with a poured perimeter foundation, then there’s a simple way that you can check the strength of the concrete to see if you might need slab foundation repair. Just take a strong screwdriver and poke at the concrete in a few different places. The concrete should be strong enough to resist any damage- if it isn’t, then it’s time to call in the experts from Crown Leveling Inc. Often this issue is caused because the original concrete was made with dirty or over-salty sand. Many homes built in the early 1900s have this problem, and unfortunately, there’s no solution short of replacing the foundation- but it’s better than the alternative of your house collapsing.
