Murder Hornets: Invading and Killing America (What You Need to Know)

The Asian giant hornet, commonly called murder hornets, have recently made their way into the United States as an invasive species. The name “murder hornets” comes from their lethal sting, which injects a powerful venom into their victims. While originally from Asia, these hornets have made their way into North America and the United States. In this video, we’ll cover everything you need to know about the Asian giant hornets.

Many people’s first concern is the danger that the murder hornets pose to themselves and their families. These hornets can be deadly, with a single sting being fatal for anyone who is allergic to their venom. However, the majority of people will not suffer any long-term damage from a single sting. That said, the Asian giant hornet has one of the most painful stings in the world, so you certainly wouldn’t want to agitate it. Throughout Asia, these hornets are responsible for dozens of deaths a year. These deaths are typically from people who have been stung dozens of times by a group of Asian giant hornets.

Another threat from the Asian giant hornet is its threat to honey bees. Honey bees are their main prey. These hornets are larger and more deadly than honey bees, which enables them to kill up to 40 bees per minute. At this rate, the murder hornets can eliminate an entire colony of honey bees within just a few hours. If murder hornets are able to settle permanently in North America, they could wreak havoc on our honey bee populations, significantly damaging our economies and ecosystems.

Currently, beekeepers and entomologists are working to eradicate the Asian giant hornets from our environments. Be sure to watch the full video to learn how they are doing it, and what you can do to stay safe during this time.
