If you’re local to Baton Rouge, you’ve likely become familiar with the city’s traffic. In fact, Baton Rouge traffic is the fourth WORST in the United States, behind Los Angeles, New York and Miami only, according to a traffic index ranking by TomTom, an electronics company.

Congestion levels in Louisiana’s capital were 27% in 2021. That means drivers on average spend 27% more time in traffic during rush hours than they would in free flow traffic. During the year’s 230 working days, about 62 hours were lost because of traffic.

And it’s no secret that traffic congestion leads to road rage, aggressive driving, and speeding… AAA states that road rage is a factor in more than 50% of all car crashes that end in fatality. Unfortunately, even the most cautious drivers can be the victims of car accidents. That’s why it’s becoming increasingly more important to be aware of dangerous roads in your area.

Here’s a list of the top five most dangerous streets/intersections in Baton Rouge:

1. Nicholson Drive

This stretch from downtown Baton Rouge all the way south of LSU’s campus sees 400 accidents a year on average.

2. O’Neal Lane from Harrell’s Ferry Road & I-12

The interstate traffic overflow is likely the cause of this, but this road sees 350 accidents each year on average.

3. Staring Lane from Highland Road to Perkins Road

Staring Lane is heavily populated with residential homes and businesses but is also the third-highest accident count with 340 accidents per year.

4. Highland Road from Perkins Road to Airline Highway

This part of Highland Road, beginning at the intersection with I-10, is particularly prone to accidents. This dangerous road sees an average of 245 accidents each year.

5. Burbank Drive from Lee Drive to Bluebonnet Drive

This long stretch of Burbank Drive is continuing to grow with new homes and businesses, which likely contributes to its yearly average of 238 accidents.
