Working out with a partner or in groups is popular amongst many people who work out on a regular basis. In fact, around 40% of people who exercise on a regular basis participate in group fitness classes. Exercising, in general, comes with many wonderful mental and physical health benefits.

Exercising with a workout partner comes with even more. If you’re feeling anxious about going to the gym alone or are worried you won’t stay motivated, then you’ll want to continue reading below. In this guide, you’ll learn about several benefits of a workout partner.

Continue reading below to get in shape while having fun!

1. Feel Like a Part of a Team

Having someone to work out with leaves you with a good sense of teamwork. When you feel like you’re a part of a team, you’ll find yourself feeling more motivated. The best workout partner is someone who’s interested in the same type of workouts as you and becomes your workout partner for motivation.

This partner might have more knowledge in the gym than you or knows just as much as you do, but together, the two of you can learn new workouts and work on building good form. When you have someone by your side who has their own goals, it’s special to see that person reach their goals as you reach yours.

Because you have someone in the gym with you, you’ll also find yourself staying focused. It’s sometimes easy to become distracted while working out alone. You might lose your pace or get caught up in scrolling through your phone while the time passes you by.

When you’re part of a team, your focus will stay on the workouts at hand and putting in a solid day at the gym!

2. Have Someone There to Hold You Accountable

If you’ve created a workout schedule for yourself in the past, then you know just how easy it is to skip a day or two. Before you know it, you might have gone days or weeks even without working out. This happens with many individuals as life gets busy and finding time to go to the gym isn’t always as simple as it seems.

It’s true, you must want to work out and you must want to make the time to do it. This is where having a workout partner comes in handy. Your workout partner makes you feel more accountable. Missing a day at the gym isn’t only disappointing yourself anymore.

It’s disappointing your workout partner as well. To prevent letting someone down, you’ll stick to your set schedule and allow your partner to motivate you.

3. Explore Safe and Effective Workout Routines

Many people enjoy working out alone and there’s nothing wrong with enjoying a solo workout. However, when you have someone to work out with, you can explore safe and effective workout routines. Not all workouts can be done alone.

Certain workouts, especially when lifting heavy, should be done with a spotter. Workout partners make the best spotters as the two of you can spot one another. It’s also ideal to have someone working out with you who can get help if needed in case of injuries or health complications.

4. Push Yourself to Do More

When working out alone, you might not feel motivated to push yourself to try something more difficult. With a workout partner by your side motivating you to push yourself, you’ll be more inclined to do so. This leads to tougher workouts and putting in more work while in the gym.

It’s not uncommon to fall into the same patterns while in the gym. Ask yourself when was the last time you went up in weights or chose to go down in weight but up in reps? Don’t fall victim to the same workout sets and reps each time.

Push yourself to do more and raise the bar every other week or so. When you see your partner advancing, you’ll want to advance too!

5. Mix Up the Normal Workouts

Have you found a few good workouts you enjoy doing? Once you’ve done a workout multiple times, you’ll begin to feel more comfortable doing this workout. You know what to do, and you know the proper form.

Now it’s time to switch it up! Mix up your workout routines and avoid doing the same workouts each time you’re in the gym as this can get boring over time. Having a workout partner is ideal because the two of you can try new workouts together, which takes some of the anxiety out of the process.

Look up workouts online, take turns choosing new workouts, switch up which muscle groups you work out together and on what days, and so on.

6. Share Progress and Validation

It’s not always easy to see progress when you look at yourself in the mirror every day. Sometimes, it’s easier to notice progress when your clothes no longer fit the same. Keep in mind that muscle is more dense than fat, so even stepping on a scale doesn’t always give you the most accurate reading on your progress.

A workout partner is a great way to share progress and validation. Although you might not notice the changes in yourself early on, you’ll notice the changes in your partner and vice versa. It’s always nice to have someone to validate your progress.

Don’t forget to let your partner know when you start to see changes in them as well!
