Temu is a rising star in the world of e-commerce, attracting thrifty shoppers looking for quality deals on everyday items. Launched in September 2022, Temu offers a wide variety of affordable products, from $0.59 hand towels to $14 smartwatches.

Since its debut, Temu’s app has been downloaded 33 million times, with 19 million downloads in the first quarter alone, according to Sensor Tower, because of its super affordability. The company gained even more attention after airing a commercial during the Super Bowl, which reached 113 million viewers. Temu’s message of shopping like a billionaire resonated with consumers, especially as concerns over affordability and rising inflation grew.

Temu’s popularity is rooted in its ability to offer low-cost items across 29 categories, sourced from global suppliers and manufacturers. By addressing everyday needs at affordable prices, Temu has captured the zeitgeist of the U.S. consumer struggling with decades-high inflation.

“Temu’s wide assortment of low-priced products ranging from clothing to electronics to home decor have proven to have mass appeal in the U.S. market,” said Seema Shah, senior director of investor research at Sensor Tower. “Shopping apps such as Temu offer incredible in-app deals for consumers, which are more relevant than ever as macroeconomic conditions have become increasingly constrained amidst rising inflation.”

To be sure, many people wonder if Temu’s products are legitimate, given their significantly lower prices compared to other retailers. Despite these concerns, Temu is indeed a legitimate platform. They achieve lower prices by identifying and eliminating inefficiencies in the manufacturing supply chain that consumers pay for without knowing.

Passing on savings from sellers to consumers

By connecting sellers directly to consumers, Temu helps third-party sellers to design, produce and ship the right products in the right quantities at the right time, producing cost savings that are passed on to consumers in the form of lower prices.

Temu assists sellers in designing trendy merchandise with its real-time insights into buyer preferences, catering to consumer needs and reducing waste from overproduction. This business model, which Temu calls “Next-Gen Manufacturing,” also helps lower marketing expenses, as consumers are more likely to purchase products that meet their preferences.

Another key factor is Temu’s global network of suppliers. By connecting consumers with manufacturers from around the world, Temu helps expand access to a diverse range of items that strike the perfect balance between price and quality, catering to a wide variety of consumer needs.

Reliable and convenient for whatever need

“I’ve always liked online shopping for its convenience, especially when I have an entire messy family to take care of, but no other sites can compare to Temu for me,” said Adam M., a Temu customer who left a review on Sitejabber. “It doesn’t even matter what’s happening in my home, whether my kitchen blender broke or my kids break something or even if I realize that I need something, I just know that I can find whatever I need on Temu for a really bargain price (and all the parents out there know how important it is to save money where you can).”

Following its popularity in the US, Temu looks set to bring its brand of value-for-money merchandising to more markets. Since its debut in the US seven months ago, Temu has expanded to Canada, then to Australia and New Zealand. There are reports that it is looking to enter the U.K. and other markets in Europe.

“The price scares people at first, but once you know someone who’s using Temu and getting all these bargains, everyone is hooked,” said Erica Miller, a YouTuber who runs the account OneCuteCouponer.
