Lead magnet definition

A lead magnet freebie (or opt-in freebie) is a free resource that you offer to potential subscribers in exchange for their email addresses. It’s a way to entice people to join your mailing list so that you can continue marketing to them and growing your business.

There are many different forms of lead magnets, but some examples include eBooks, checklists, cheat sheets, templates, and courses. You can offer anything that would be valuable to your target audience and that they would be willing to exchange their email address for.

When choosing a lead magnet, you must consider what would be most valuable to your target audience. What would they find useful? What would help them solve a problem or accomplish a goal?

our lead magnet should be high quality and something you’re proud to put your name on. Don’t try to cut corners or offer something that’s not worth their time. It will reflect poorly on you and your business if people sign up for your lead magnet and then realize it’s not worth their while.

Take the time to create a lead magnet that will help your target audience, and you’ll be sure to see an uptick in email signups.

There are tons of things that you can use as an irresistible opt-in freebie. Let’s dive in.

Why is it important to have opt-in freebies/lead magnets?

Not all website visitors will be ready to purchase your services because each is at a different stage in the buyer’s journey. If you want to turn those same visitors into paying customers, a process must be followed.

That process is called inbound marketing, and it involves 4 stages: attract, convert, close, and delight.

The first stage is to attract strangers to your website with valuable content. You can do this through SEO keywords, social media posts, or even running ads. Once they’re on your site, you need to give them a reason to stay by providing even more valuable content in the form of opt-in freebies.

This is where lead magnets come in. By offering a freebie in exchange for an email address, you can convert website visitors into leads that you can then market to and close as paying customers.

And once they’re paying customers, the final stage is to delight them with such fantastic service that they become raving fans, provide tons of social proof, and refer others to you.

It starts with a lead magnet, so let’s look at some of the best opt-in freebies for coaching businesses.

Opt-in freebie ideas

Free email course

If you have expertise in a particular area, you can create a mini email course to teach people what you know. This is an excellent way to show off your knowledge and build trust with your audience.

People are always looking for ways to learn new things, so an email course is a great lead magnet freebie idea. Plus, it’s easy to create! You can write out a series of emails with information and tips on your topic of choice.

To make your email course even more valuable, you can include templates, cheat sheets, or other resources that people can use as they’re going through the course.

The other reason this one is particularly great is that people expect emails from you. Therefore, your email open rates will be fantastic, which will do wonders when you run a future email marketing campaign.

Free ebook

An ebook is another great lead magnet idea. This is a more in-depth resource than an email course, and it’s perfect for people who want to dive deep into a topic.

An ebook can be anywhere from 20 to 100 pages or more, and it should be packed with valuable information that your target audience will find helpful.

To create an ebook, you can compile a bunch of blog posts or articles you’ve already written on a specific topic. Or, you can start from scratch and write something entirely new. Either way, it’s sure to be a hit with your audience!

Free checklist or cheat sheet

A checklist or cheat sheet is a quick and easy way to provide value to your audience. This type of lead magnet freebie is perfect for busy people who want a quick resource that they can refer to again and again.

Most people don’t have time to sift through a 100-page ebook, but they would be more than happy to grab a 1-page checklist that they can use as a quick reference guide.

To create a checklist or cheat sheet, choose a topic and brainstorm all the key points people need to know about it. You can even write them out as simple bullet points. Once you have your list, format it in an attractive and easy-to-use way, and voila! You have a valuable lead magnet freebie.

This is the format that I’ve chosen for one of my lead magnets. When visitors download it, it’s a strong signal they would be interested and would really benefit from my course.

Free Template

Templates are another great lead magnet idea. These can be anything from social media post templates to email templates to Excel spreadsheets. If people can use it to make their lives easier, it makes for a great template.

People love getting templates because they save so much time. Rather than starting from scratch, they can use your template and fill in their information.

To create a template, choose the type of document or file you want to create and then design it in a way that’s easy for people to use. Once you have your template, save it as a PDF or other file type and make it available for download.

Free resource list

A resource list is a great lead magnet freebie for people who want to learn more about a topic. This can be anything from a list of the best books on a specific topic to a list of the best websites for entrepreneurs.

A resource list is a curated list of the best resources on a particular topic. The value you’re bringing to your audience, in this case, is the time and effort you’ve put into finding the best resources. Sure, they can go out and find this on their own. But isn’t it handy to have it done for you in an easy-to-read document?

Free online course or video training

If you have some expertise to share, an online course or video training makes for a great lead magnet freebie. Of course, you might not want to give away an entire course, but you could consider giving your target audience a sneak peek at the first lesson, for example.

If you have a higher ticket program, it could make sense to give more content away. However, it depends on your long-term strategy.

Once you’ve decided on the content you want to give away, you can deliver it via email, through a password-protected page on a membership site, or by simply keeping your videos unlisted on YouTube and sharing the links with your audience.

Free quiz or assessment

A quiz or assessment is a fun way to engage your audience and get them thinking about their goals. This type of lead magnet can help people assess their current situation, figure out where they want to be, and determine what steps they need to take to get there.

Quizzes have been used for years to engage audiences. They’re fun, they’re thought-provoking, and they can be irresistible. It’s probably not important which Friends character you are, but you still HAD to do that quiz to find out if you’re Rachel!

One thing to remember with quizzes and assessments is that you don’t want to overwhelm people with too many questions. Stick to 10 questions max, and make sure they’re relevant to your target audience.

The bottom line is that a lead magnet freebie should be something your target audience will find valuable. It should be something that they can use to improve their lives in

Free workbook or worksheet

Filling out a worksheet or workbook can be an excellent way for people to get organized and figure out what they need to do to achieve their goals. This type of lead magnet can be used for anything from weight loss to organization to business planning.

A lead magnet freebie like this is especially valuable because it’s interactive. Unlike a PDF or video, people can actually fill out the worksheet and get results, leading to a higher perceived value.

Facebook Group

Although somewhat time-consuming, managing a free community could be an amazing opt-in freebie. Make sure, however, that people need to request access and provide their email addresses and answer some basic questions before being let in. This will ensure that the wrong people don’t get in, particularly spammers.

Password-protected blog content

We know that it’s essential to create content to attract potential clients. However, you could consider making certain pieces available only to people who fill out a lead capture form.

Pdf version of a blog post

If you’re writing relatively long blog articles, some of your website visitors could be interested in receiving a pdf version of the article straight in their inbox so they can read it at their convenience. The great thing is that it doesn’t need to be fancy. A simple PDF print of the article stored in Google Drive will do the trick!

Private podcast

While a public podcast can be a great way to attract new listeners, you could consider making specific episodes private and password-protected. This will give people an incentive to sign up for your email list, and they’ll appreciate the extra content that they wouldn’t be able to access otherwise.

When your email subscribers realize that you provide them with tools and additional resources that save time, it’s only a matter of time before they turn into paying clients and skyrocket your online business!

Many coaches struggle with what to include on their website and how to make it effective in terms of marketing. We’ve determined that a lead magnet is critical to one’s own business. And, of course, it’s one of the most important aspects of any website!

Here are five places on your website where you should place a link to your lead magnet, especially if you have an online business.

Create a banner

Create a banner or graphic to place at the top of your home page that links to your lead magnet. This ensures that visitors will see it as soon as they arrive on your website and will be more likely to click through.

Some tips for creating a good banner:

-Make sure the banner is eye-catching and catches the viewer’s attention.

-Include a brief description of what the lead magnet is about.

-Make it easy for visitors to click through to the landing page where they can download the lead magnet.

Add a button to your header

Adding a button to your header is another excellent way to make your lead magnet more visible and ensure that visitors will see it. You don’t have a lot of space on a button, so make sure to include a brief description of what the lead magnet is and what visitors will get by downloading it. It should be something that targets their pains or dream outcome.

Examples:

  • Increase Web Traffic
  • I want more leads
  • Easy website checklist
  • Manifestation Audio Course

Your website’s footer is another great place to include an opt-in form for your lead magnet. This ensures that visitors will see it no matter where they are on your website and makes it easy for them to sign up.

Make sure to include a brief description of the lead magnet and what visitors will get from downloading it. Again, use powerful language because, unlike a complete landing page, you don’t have a lot of space to work with.

Use popups

A popup opt-in form is a great way to increase the visibility of your lead magnet and get more people to sign up. You can set it up so that it appears when someone first visits your website or after they’ve been on your site for a certain amount of time.

Just ensure that you don’t use too many pop-ups or make them too intrusive, as this can annoy visitors and cause them to leave your site.

As you know, my favorite page builder is Elementor.

With Elementor, you can consider and set up 6 types of triggers for your popups.

On-page load popup

This popup appears as soon as a visitor arrives at a specific page. For example, you’ll often see popups like this for online shops where they offer you a 10% discount if you signup for their list as soon as you get there.

Exit intent popup

This type of popup appears when someone is about to leave your website.

Timed popup

This type of popup appears after someone has been on your website for some time.

Scroll trigger popup

This type of popup appears when someone has scrolled a certain percentage down your page. You’ll notice if you’re scrolling my welcome page, I have a popup inviting visitors to download my free e-book- How To Build An Online Business In A Day.

Inactivity sensor popup

This type of popup appears when someone has been inactive on your page for some time.

Click trigger popup

This type of popup appears when someone clicks on a particular element on your page.

If you have a blog on your website, include links and opt-in forms for your lead magnet in each post. This is a great way to get more people to sign up, as they’re already interested in the topic of your blog post.

Include a link to your lead magnet in the introduction and conclusion of each post, as well as a mention of it throughout the body of the post. You can also include an opt-in form in your blog sidebar.

You’ll notice as you’re reading this post that there are links to my free checklist all over the place, showing my exact framework for building a coaching website in just a few hours.

These are just a few places on your website where you can include a link to your lead magnet. By making it more visible, you’ll be able to increase the conversion rate, or in other words, the number of people who sign up and download it.

Now that you better understand the different types of lead magnets and where to place them on your website, it’s time to start creating your own.

Creating a lead magnet can seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be. The point is to keep it simple and focus on providing value to your audience by filling it with relevant information. With these tips in mind, you’ll be well on your way to creating a lead magnet that converts and helps you grow your coaching business!
