10 Environmental Organizations Focused on Solving Climate Change

Climate change is the leading threat to human civilization. We must take action to stop it. Environmental organizations are in action.

Groups are working all around the world to protect forests, oceans, and wildlife. You can join them, once you know who they are. Here are ten of the world’s leading environmental organizations. 

1. The Environmental Defense Fund

The Environmental Defense Fund is a nonprofit organization. The Fund approaches activism with an interdisciplinary approach. They employ scientists, lawyers, economists, and community organizers. The Fund has advocated for many environmental reforms, including habitat exchanges. 

2. 350

350 is active in more than 180 countries. 350 uses public action activism to oppose fossil fuels and support renewable energy. They are currently advocating for a zero-carbon global economy. 

3. Greenpeace

Greenpeace is active in more than 40 countries. They assemble a broad coalition of activists, students, and scientists. They write and investigate environmental hazards and issues. They work on a wide range of issues, including Arctic preservation and air pollution.

4. The National Audubon Society

The National Audubon Society is a nonprofit organization based in the United States. They work to protect birds, identifying their habitats and protecting them from destruction. They maintain more than 500 chapters across the country. Many of their habitats are open to the public for education and recreation. 

5. The Trust for Public Land

The Trust for Public Land is a nonprofit organization also based in the United States. Their mission is to create parks and protect natural landmarks. They have protected over three million acres of land. They have lobbied for more than 500 ballot measures.

6. Oceana

Oceana is an organization focused on protecting the world’s oceans. Oceana works with global leaders and lawmakers to conserve marine life. They protect more than four million square miles of ocean.

7. American Rivers

American Rivers is a national river conservation group founded in 1973. American Rivers has restored thousands of miles of river habitats. They stop droughts, supplying more than thirty million Americans with water in 2019. 

8. Cultural Survival

Cultural Survival is a nonprofit organization that fights for Indigenous Peoples. Cultural Survival works with Indigenous Peoples to preserve their land. Cultural Survival provides education and work opportunities to Indigenous Peoples as well. 

9. Earthjustice

Earthjustice is a public interest organization focused on environmental law. They employ lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants to file lawsuits. Earthjustice lawyers have assisted with pieces of legislation like the Clean Air Act. 

10. The Climate Leadership Council

The Climate Leadership Council is a coalition of business, opinion, and environmental leaders. The Climate Leadership Council promotes carbon dividends to mitigate climate change. The Council is organizing with other environmental organizations to pass carbon measures. They plan on expanding to other countries like India to build a global program.
