How to Properly Walk With a Cane

Imagine walking into a room. You turn your head to get a lay of the land, and you begin to teeter. Your gait capsizes and slows, and what was once a smooth stride becomes a stumble. That’s not a great feeling and one that most of us would avoid.

Start With the Right Cane

Find the Right Fit

How to Walk With a Cane 

Check the weight rating to ensure that the cane will hold your weight and allow you to walk comfortably with it.

Always remember not to walk too fast when using a cane. A slow, steady pace is best. Walk slowly and deliberately, and take small steps. If you need to turn, simply pivot on your toes while keeping your weight over your cane. 

Keep your arm and shoulder relaxed. Be sure to practice at home before venturing out in public. 

Cautiously Walk With a Cane

Now that you’ve learned how to walk with a cane, make sure you follow your doctor’s instructions. In general, maintain the cane in the hand opposite your wounded leg and your elbow bent at a 90-degree angle.

When using the cane, take the first step with your wounded leg, then your cane, and finally your healthy limb. Before using it on a daily basis, practice walking with it, and always listen to your body if you are in discomfort.
