As we are getting into the spring season in sports and with the Coronavirus outbreak affecting us here in the US, it’s important to be smart about how we protect ourselves. The Coronavirus is a droplet infection which means it’s carried on droplets from an infected person’s mucosal membranes and spread through the air when that person is coughing or sneezing, or after touching the face and then unintentionally touching someone else.

Common sense can go far in the fight against contaminating each other. Since you can carry the virus without feeling sick, we all need to act as if we’re infected. This means we need to keep a distance to other people if possible, avoiding direct contact and washing our hands frequently. Obviously, in sports that’s not possible during practice or games. But there are still things we can do minimize the risk of getting infected by the virus. NBA has recommended fist bumps instead of high 5’s. Greeting with our elbows is another step in the way to limit the spread.

When it comes to protective devices, you need to pick the right mouth guard for many reasons. Of course, you need the safest one for your teeth but there is more to it this season. When you are looking for a new mouthguard, pick one that fits perfectly and promotes natural communication and hydration, so you don’t have to take it out with your dirty hands. You should avoid mouthguards that moves around easily, and you should also avoid chewing on them or sticking them in your helmet. A protective and safe mouthguard fits perfectly and allows you to do what you need to do without touching it. As an added safety point, try to get one that is made in the USA.

At SISU we performed a study of hockey players, comparing a standard, bulky mouthguard with a perfectly fitting, thin SISU Mouthguard. We then swabbed hands and guards after the practice. All standard guards had microorganisms (pathogens) on the surface but only a fraction of the SISU guards. The explanation is simple; a SISU Mouthguard fits so well and is so thin that you don’t need to mess with it. Athletes often say they don’t even notice they have the guard in. And when you are not hindered to talk, breathe and drink, there is no need to take it out.
