Fluorescent Lighting for the Economical Solution
 by: Kathryn Dawson

When it comes to illuminating your home or workplace, then fluorescent lighting is a highly effective and efficient method to choose. It is capable of converting light into electrical power much more resourcefully than any other type of lighting and, although it can be slightly more expensive to buy than standard lights, the money you save every month in your energy bills will very quickly make up for it.

Fluorescent lighting is popular in industrial and commercial properties as it is cheap, bright and needs the minimum of maintenance, when you are lighting a large area then changing light bulbs every few days is just not plausible. Homeowners have now caught onto the many benefits of fluorescent lighting and there are all kinds of lighting options these days that will save you money and look good in any room.

With the economy as it is we are all on the look out for money saving tactics. Heating and energy bills can be high, particularly in the darker winter months when more time is spent indoors, choosing fluorescent lights for your home makes sense and will stop you from constantly going around the house switching lights off in an attempt to save money. If you are leaving the room just for a short period then it's actually better to leave the light on as more energy is used in the turning on and off process.

There have been a lot of improvements over the past few years, one very important feature of fluorescent bulbs is that they use up to 75% less energy than a regular bulb does. They are also extremely versatile and can be found in all shapes and sizes making them suitable for every situation. Lasting much longer than other types of bulbs, they are easy to change when necessary; years ago you could only get them as ceiling fixtures, however these days you can find them in floor and desk lamps, wall lamps and even chandeliers.

The bright light supplied by fluorescent lighting means they are suitable for work areas - the office, kitchen and your workbench will all benefit from being well-lit and you don't have to have them fitted in the main ceiling light either. Use wall or desk lamps to throw extra light on the particular area you are working in, then just switch it off when you want a softer light.

Check out the lumens of the bulbs before you buy, these determine how bright the actual bulb will be. If you want a very bright light to see clearly by then you will need a bulb with a high lumen. Another element to note is where to place the lighting fixture, if it is located in the ceiling but installed too high or low then it could cause glare or not throw enough light out to see as clearly as you wish.

Fluorescent lighting can be used in all kinds of places, use strip light fittings for under your kitchen cabinets enabling you to see everything clearly when preparing meals, ceiling pendant lights in various lengths to brightly light a room, and suspended ceiling lights for direct light. The lifespan of fluorescent lighting is approx. 5,000 hours and light bulbs are not expensive to replace.

Fluorescent desk lamps are popular as they can last as long as 10,000 hours, much longer than traditional bulbs, and help keep your electric bill down by only outputting a small portion of their energy as heat.

There are some great modern fluorescent floor lamps that can update the look of a room and fit in with any style and décor. Chrome, steel, brass and matt black, aluminium, plastic, glass and metal are just some of the materials you can choose from. Floor lamps can help create layers of light in combination with other light fixtures and allow you to vary the height. If you want an additional light for reading, then check out lamps with a swivel arm where you can easily change the direction to point where you want it to.

Order your home or commercial lighting online and you'll find a great choice of products, fast delivery service, and outstanding value for money.
