What is Toenail Fungus?

Many people suffer from toenail fungus. Basically, toenail fungus refers to fungus which can easily be transmitted by coming into contact with the fungus in a public place like pool or locker room. As a matter of fact, fungus thrives in warm moist place and can easily be picked by those who have small cuts or opening area or underneath the toenail.

Symptoms – Those who suffer from this fungus usually experienced cracked, brittle nails, discolored nails especially yellow and black. It can really be painful if the nails lift away from the nail bed. With nail fungus, itching sometimes occurs but not all the cases. The condition can become as well as severe if you left untreated the nail fungal infection. Moreover, treatments also become difficult when it is spread in all the nails.

Treatment – You can consult doctor if you have toenail fungus. But the medications prescribed by the doctors often associate some effects, which can also be very severe. So, finding a natural home treatment for toenail fungus is much better as it doesn’t have any adverse side effects in comparison to oral medication.

Some of the other treatments also include soaking your feet in the Listerine, with the application of Vicks VapoRub or you can soak the infected area in apple cider vinegar. But such treatments aren’t a guarantee fix; they may treat the problem but may not cure the problem completely. Patients often conducts treatment for many months or even years to see results, but applying on daily basis is the best way for treating the infection.

Prevention – As we know prevention is better than cure. Prevention can always help you to get rid of the nail fungus. One good way to begin with to keeping good hygiene, after shower keep your feet dry and be sure to wear slippers or sandals in the public areas such as swimming pools or locker rooms etc.

One of the preventive measures is to change your socks often and avoid wearing the same shoes every day. You should trimmed your nails but don’t trimmed too short. Tiny cuts can allow the entry of fungus under the toenails. If the infection persists, you need to consult a certified physician. Apart from taking medications, there are also other options that can help you cure the nail fungal infection. Treatments include applying or painting on the infected areas, a simple surgery can also be performed just to remove the nails, which allows a new healthy nail to grow in its place. Never left untreated the nail fungal infection as it can become more worsen or severe. Diabetic patients need to be especially aware of any toenail fungus. They require medical attention immediately if such problems arise.
