Know Your Life Purpose and Achieve Fulfillment-A Personal Testimony
There are many, many different theories, concepts, conspiracies, and everything in between on how to find, know, and grow one’s life purpose. I’m not going to dictate what or which way is right or wrong, especially since I can only speak from my own personal experience, but I will say use whatever tools and resources that resonate best with you. Thus, I’m going to share with you what’s been helpful for me to uncover my purpose. Hopefully with the following information that I’ve learned through my own journey it could be useful to you as well. 1. Your Life Purpose ≠ Your Occupation, Everyday Responsibilities, Personal/Professional Goals, What the World or Other People Tell You- This was a hard concept for me to accept at first especially since the majority of our time is spent in the workforce and caring for loved ones and/or ourselves. However, one of the major lessons I’ve learned is that life is more than just a ‘To Do List’ of things that have to be done and that there is more to life than just the everyday routine. 2. It Takes Time - The time it takes to uncover one’s purpose can really vary from person to person. Depending on how close in touch you are with yourself to begin with, it can take anywhere I’ve read from five minutes to a few years. For me it took 10 years with some commitment to find my purpose but, be encouraged in knowing that no matter the time it takes it is VERY well worth it. 3. Commitment-When I say commitment, it doesn’t mean that I spent every waking hour thinking hard and obsessing over it but, rather researched and studied different books, audio books, seminars, spiritual inventory quizzes, and practicing my spiritual faith through prayer and meditation. Through different exercises suggested by these resources you can get many steps closer to discovering what your purpose is. Suggested Exercises: Write down on a sheet of paper all the qualities that you want people to remember you for. Whatever adjectives that describe you that mostly comes up repeatedly on the page could actually be your purpose or be close to it. If you are also on the religious/spiritual plane consider taking a spiritual inventory quiz, which is designed uncover your gifts/talents that could be contributed to the world and could be very eye-opening for you. 4. Reflection- What did you most enjoy doing when you were growing up? How did it make you feel? Is there anything in this life that you can’t just live without? What brings you the most joy no matter what? (That last question was a HUGE help for me) This would be a good exercise as well to take to paper. Give your most honest and truthful answers to these type of questions. Speaking of truth…………. 5. Truth- Be unapologetically truthful with yourself when it comes to asking those reflection questions above and don’t be afraid of what answers may pop up. For a long time, I wasn’t ready to accept the truth about my gifts/talents, enjoyments, and what I do and don’t like, which is why it took me so long to find my purpose. I was too busy beating up on myself, condemning myself because I thought I had to be a certain way. By accepting who you are and appreciating who you are as an individual (despite your looks, intellect, background, past history, and whatever else you think that doesn’t make you good enough) will get you to your goal of knowing your life purpose. When you find your own unique answer to the question “What is my life purpose?” it could be a very quiet discovery or a great aha moment or comes in segments in your journey. However, once you do find it, it will definitely resonate with you very deeply and you will feel it with great joy and peace. Every time you think about your purpose, you will be energized, full of confidence, peace, and liberated. It is with my hope and prayer that once you do uncover your purpose in life, you will be living how I’m living now-an abundant life. Remember: When you are doing what you love profoundly and are in a constant state of joy, you’ve found your purpose, living your purpose, and fulfilling your purpose.
