There Is No Going Backwards by Ted Ciuba

They'd been tried by the long voyage; the savages were painted in outlandish colors, screamed, and yelled, and they thought it was something that maybe they shouldn't do, maybe they couldn't do—who knew how it would turn out? Hernán Cortéz solved that.

"There's one way we'll leave this land alive, and that is by going forward. There is no going backwards."
