What if you could do anything you want?
 by: Tim Hodgson

Let me ask you a question. I’d like you to take a moment to think about it though – because it’s worth your attention.

The question is…. “What is the one thing you would do if you knew you couldn’t fail?”

I’ve been asking this question a lot recently, as I’ve been going round talking to people, attending networking events, talking to people, learning what people want. And it’s a question that I’ve been asking myself a lot too. “Just what would I do, if I couldn’t fail?” What would you do if you knew that your success was guaranteed? What would you do? Where would you go?

The reason I love the question is because it reveals something about our dreams, something about our hopes, something about our aspirations. It tells us something about what we want to get out of life. If we think about that question, then we start to understand what would happen if we threw out the limits of our self belief.

So I get some great answers to that question:

“Well, I’d throw in my job and start my own business”

“Well, I’d ask that girl that I see every day on the bus if she’d like to go for a drink some time”

“Well, I’d write a book and get it published”

“Well, I’d give up work and go travelling for a year”

“Well, I’d start a home for young offenders”

“Well, I’d make my business an incredible success”

“Well, I’d go and get that major contract”

So what stops us?

When we ask that question, we always end up with a reality check though, don’t we? “But let’s be realistic”… “But let’s face the facts, it’s never going to happen”… “But I haven’t got the experience… the skills… the courage”… “But I’m too old... or too young…”

Here’s the thing though… we really CAN have what we want. We really CAN achieve our goals.

I’ve been talking to a lot of people lately - I’ve been listening to a lot of CDs, and reading a lot of books. The one thing that’s been coming across loud and clear is that we can achieve anything we want to. We can get incredible results, if we’re prepared to commit ourselves to the dreams that we want.

I know that so often I look at what I would like to do, some great dream, some great goal – and then I look at all the reasons why I couldn’t possibly achieve it. I build a set of excuses for myself, reasons why I shouldn’t even try.

So, here’s the secret. Here’s the key. We actually all have the resources inside ourselves to achieve our dreams. We all have what we need to be incredibly successful – it’s just that we don’t believe it. We’ve learnt to limit ourselves, to shrink ourselves. Perhaps it’s to protect ourselves from disappointment, perhaps it’s to fit in.. I don’t know. What I do know is that as human beings we tend to undervalue ourselves. We tend to believe in our limits rather than our strengths. We tend to focus on what we can’t do, rather than what we can.

All we need though is to choose to unlock those resources, those skills, those abilities. We might simply be able to unlock them ourselves. Or perhaps we need to find someone who can teach us. Perhaps we simply need someone to prod us into action, or someone to help us look at what’s possible, and help us build a plan to get there. I know that I really value the people around me who say “you can do it” – the ones who give me a good kick in the seat of my pants to get me going. I value the people who, when I do hit a roadblock, are prepared to dust me off, set me on my feet again, and just say “don’t just stand there feeling sorry for yourself.. get up and get on with it”.

So, over the next couple of weeks, stretch your muscles a little. Try something you’ve always wanted to do but haven’t had the courage to. Pluck up the courage to ask that bloke on a date. Start to look for a new job. Pursue that incredible contract. Write the first chapter of your book. Look at the options – consider the possibilities – take the time to imagine what it could be like – and then take action. Give it a try: and amaze yourself at just what you could achieve… when you really want to.

Over the next few weeks and months, this newsletter is going to focus on giving you some of the tools you need to make a real impression on the world – how to create change in your life, how to create balance, how to eliminate stress. We’ll look at how to present yourself, how to speak in public – in short, how to have personal impact. I want to help you stand out – in your career, in your social life, wherever you find yourself.
