Just like a client chooses his coach, life coaches and executive coaches will also choose their clients. Why do they do this? Because a coaches reputation depends on his clients, and also as a coach you know what type of clients you like to work with.

Being a coach gives you insight into people, this you will use when choosing clients for your life coaching business, because you realize the importance of having the right client, just like the client will realize the importance of having the right life coach or executive coach.

Choosing clients that you choose to coach sometimes has nothing to do with what the clients’ current mindset is, so if you are a client and you get referred to another life coach, by a coach, the chances are it is done to your benefit. Why wouldn´t the coach want to take me as a client you might ask. The thing is a good coach will think of you as well as himself, there is a tight group within the coaching society or profession, each with certain strengths and specialization. This is also part of why a coach may refer you as a client, to another life coach, you may fit another coach better. Therein lies value for both parties knowing that if you talk to a coach he will not necessarily take you on as a client, he will think of your benefit as well and refer you to a coach that will provide you with the coaching you are looking for.

Why might a coach refer me elsewhere? To better explain this here is an example, if you are looking to become better at playing tennis, you will look for a tennis pro to teach you, you wouldn´t go see a golf pro would you? Coaching is a relatively new profession, as coaches we know more about what we do than most of our clients do. So even though a client may see a coach as a coach, we will know that you might be looking for one to help you with “tennis” while he specializes in “golf”.

Coaches are as many as clients and there is a match for you out there. So even though you might have ended up with a “bad” coach because he was desperate for clients, don´t be discouraged. Not every golf pro will fit the way you like to learn how to play golf. Find another coach, find one that will help you get the results that you are looking for, there is a life coach out there for you. Additionally there are now more and more companies that are not coaches, they work as referrers for coaches. So you contact them, they will then go through their network of life coaches and executive coaches to find the right match for you. They work as a mediator between clients and coaches. If you have already tried a coach and you did not find the coaching relationship to be working you can look for one of these mediators, they can also help you find a right coach for you.
