She'll Be Apples - New Light On An Old Temptation
 by: Jasmin Cabaday

For the team at The Kids Bible Company LLC, producers of ‘The Animated Kid’s Bible’ Collectable DVD Series, maintaining Biblical integrity was of utmost priority, but so too was the capacity to thoroughly engage & 'edu-tain' young audiences.

With this in mind, a panel of writers was commissioned to draw biblical truths from the greatest & most controversial book ever written, the Bible. Then bring it to the screen with portraying these historical yet ordinary people who lived extraordinary lives.

In the premier episode, ‘Creation’, presented in super-vivid 3D-CGI (computer generated images) Eve eats from the tree of knowledge of good & evil, and much to our initial surprise she eats a yet unidentified fruit that drips with persuasiveness. Are we surprised? You bet! Since the 'forbidden fruit' has traditionally been presented to us - as being an apple. And such is the strong reaction the images evoke; it’s enough to send you reaching for your Bible to substantiate!

It is possible that the ‘traditional apple view’ stemmed from a pun of the Latin word ‘malus,’ which loosely, sounds like ‘evil’ and ‘apple.’ But, as we check Genesis 3:6 it says: “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of the fruit and ate.”

Most of us probably know the story of Adam & Eve: the woman was deceived, & the eating of the fruit brought the swift sentence of death to mankind. The serpent was cursed to disgrace and destruction; the woman was doomed to sorrow in child-bearing and subservience to her husband; and the man was predestined to distress, disappointment, and a life of hard labor.

OK. So what’s the point, you ask? The whole point of the Bible story in Genesis was not so much the type of fruit that Eve ate, but the abject lesson of obedience which God was trying to teach His created: Adam and Eve. God had set a clear boundary: his created were able to eat from any other tree in Paradise - but they were forbidden to eat from only one tree out of the many. The fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil.

Decades of movies, videos, & children’s Bible storybooks have indelibly impressed upon us the common apple as the bane of the curse of sin, and yet without scriptural accuracy: a critical point the writers were obviously keen to share with their potentially vast viewing audience.

So keen in fact, that the premise is reasoned out in the ‘Special Features’ segment presented by a quirky penguin called Pip! In addition to the main story within each episode of “The Animated Kids Bible”, this segment holds a real treasure chest that is embedded with precious facts, meticulously researched to enrich the viewers’ knowledge and appreciation of biblical characters and their unique history.

Each character finds their place on the family tree, and as the genealogy grows, so too does our interest in future episodes. A ‘Fact File’ is loaded with information on maps - historical and modern day - timelines of the biblical families are tendered. Additionally, very interesting and relevant questions that only a child would think of are promptly answered.

Animation story-boards are offered also for those young viewers who are keen to learn more about the animation process. An original animated music video is also part of the line-up to enthrall the young viewers and to get them smiling. And to complete the picture, orientation is provided by way of preview trailers for up and coming episodes too, added to satisfy the viewers’ curiosity.
