Softball Coaching Tips – The Secret to Coaching Female Softball Players

If you’re coaching a softball team for the first time, it’s perfectly alright to become nervous on your first day. And I’m pretty sure that it can be even more nerve-racking if you’re a guy who’s coaching female athletes for the first time.

You see, dealing with female athletes is different from working with male players. As you go on with your coaching career, then I’m sure that the differences between these types of athletes will be even more apparent.

Just so you wouldn’t fumble on your first day of coaching, here are my softball coaching tips for you if you’re coaching female softball players.

The Secret to Coaching Female Softball Players

If there’s one thing that you should learn early on as a coach is that there are some things that you cannot change in your players. Fighting those things will only frustrate you and create animosity between you and your players. So instead of doing that, you should learn to understand the situation and find a way around it.

That said, there’s one big thing that you should know that you cannot change among the majority of female athletes. The thing is that unlike male athletes, females put more emphasis on the relationships they make in the team.

Because of this trait, you’ll notice that women tend to be more chatty with their teammates. And unless you give them enough chat time before the game or practice, their conversations could carry on throughout the game or practice, and even after it.

So instead of telling them to quit talking, make them come early so that they can have enough time to talk among themselves and update each other before going down to business. Once you do this, you’ll notice that they’ll be more focused on what they’re doing on the field.

As I always say, the key difference between male and female athletes is that men need to play the game in order to feel good.

On the other hand, women need to feel good in order to play the game. So along with their warm ups, it would be a good idea to give your female players enough time to chat before playing.

Create More Meaningful Team Activities

Here’s another tip. Now that you know that women put a premium on the relationships they make with their teammates, you should also carry it over to all the activities that your team does.

And I’m not just talking about team practice or games here. Also, think about your team-building activities such as parties, or whatnot – even something as simple as sharing meals. Whatever you ask your team to do, always remember to add the element of building relationships there.
