5 Tips to Get the Right Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy
 by: Lea Mullins

If you are looking at purchasing a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy then there are few key characteristics and details you might want to look at first.

First and foremost is going to be the ridge of hair which runs along their spine. This ridge of hair runs against the direction of the rest. So this is what identifies their specific breed.

Secondly, these breeds are fantastic watch dogs and protectors of their home and family. So when choosing the ideal puppy, make sure they don’t scare easily. You’re looking for the bold one from the litter, that ops to come towards you and check you out. This obviously displays that they are not afraid of people.

The next thing is to decide whether you are looking for showing this breed or having them as a family pet. If looking at showing your Rhodesian Ridgeback then you will need to view the breed’s standards in regards to swirls that are to be limited in length, white toes are seen as below breed standard although a small amount of white on the chest is acceptable. Check their background; both parents should be available to view as well as papers stating the authenticity of the breed and any health related issues they have.

Another thing to take into consideration is their trainability; do you have the time and patience to train them? Rhodesian Ridgeback tend to have a stubborn streak in them when it comes to training. A lot of patience is needed for these dogs. While their exercise requirements are not too extreme, one to two hours a day is recommended to keep them fit, lean and healthy as well as having a good dietary balance of food.

Temperament is probably an important characteristic too look into. These dogs a very loving and loyal to their families, and are great guard dogs and protectors, they don’t necessarily take too kindly to strangers, other dogs or pets, but may be ok when introduced at a young age and some training they might become more tolerant otherwise they may act aggressively towards them. Behavioral issues may be fixed with a lot of training which will mean a lot of patience and time from you.

Rhodesian Ridgeback’s are great lovable pets for the family, amazing guard dogs and protectors and give you the peace of mind and reassurance while your family sleeps or goes on holidays. Look into all the key aspects of this wonderful breed to work out if they are the right pet for your family and also ask the breeder questions about their background and upbringing so you can be sure you have the right characteristics in the Rhodesian you’ve chosen.
