My favorite pet was my a dog. Actually I had 2 favorite dogs. One was Scamp. He was a black lab and my total buddy when I was growing up. Because I had polio, I was in wheelchair and crutches a lot. He was by my side constantly and was my protector. Because we lived on the campus where my dad was president, we had open access to many building. And Scamp always found me! He snuck into the school building, the chapel building and the empty buildings where I would play. He always wanted to be with me and I always wanted him by my side. He was my buddy for many years. Upon his death I was devastated. Another dog just didn't fill his place in my heart.

My next dog was given to us by our son, several years after I was married. His name was TUFF and he was a golden retriever/lab cross. He was smart, cute and faithful. He hated to be alone and went with us everywhere we went. He loved to run alongside when we would ride in the mountains. And I taught him to pick up things for me when I would drop them. We would go for long walk, me in my electric scooter and Tuff happily running beside me. He died from kidney failure a couple of years after ingesting some poison. One of the funniest things with Tuff was at Christmas time. He knew that under the tree was a special present for him. Usually a great big bone, bought from the butcher. In his special basket was this treat and maybe a new toy. He loved to play with squeaky toys. Throwing them himself, catching them and retrieving him kept him busy for hours.
