Dog Breeding
 by: Lyndsay Searle

Baby animals are so adorable and none more than puppies, it is so easy to just to waste time watching their antics while they clown around tumbling and playing.

I have this pleasure quite frequently as I breed Maltese dogs in New Zealand.

There are many people who decide that they too would love to experience the joy and fun of having a litter of puppies who are under the false illusion that they can just mate their bitch with any old dog and hey presto there will be puppies.

Like any animal breeding it is better to be informed and prepared before you even start, 85% of those that know what they are doing have a successful outcome. There are of course things that will be out of your control but the more knowledge you have the more likely you are to have a healthy happy litter of puppies.

Would you know when the best time to mate your bitch is? Do you know what tests are available to find out? Would you know how to revive a puppy that is not breathing? These are a few of the questions that you need answers to before your dog even gets pregnant.

Not everyone is a midwife, like I am (so I have quite an advantage), and the whole process of birth can make some people squeamish so it is better to have read about it and have an idea of what is to come.

If there are children involved it is important that you have explained to them what to expect and what is normal.

Most animals give birth to their young in the night when it is peaceful and quiet and usually a safe time under the cover of darkness away from predators. This practice continues even with domesticated animals of many generations, indeed even human babies tend to be born at inconvenient hours of the night. So the chances are high that you will be up all night supervising the birth. However it will all be worth it when mother and puppies are safely curled up on their bed by morning.

I have written an, easy to read and follow account of what to do and expect from the time before your dog gets pregnant until the puppies are 9 weeks old. This book takes you by the paw step by step.
