Knowing what you are getting into before hand is a crucial element in succeeding in the internet marketing world. You should always do your market research before you ever start any type of business.

The first thing you should do is write down a list of your interests, things that make you, you. You should include on this list your hobbies, hot buttons, and things that you consider yourself to be an expert in or at least are very knowledgeable with.

To see if any of these niches we have chosen are going to be profitable or not, let's start from the top of the list. All that is required of you here is to find things that are already moving in this niche. For example if we know a lot about dogs then check to see what information is selling on dogs. Look in dog magazines, go to a veterinarians office, or check on some websites and see what they are selling.

The best place to search for a niche is at Amazon. Amazon is the worlds largest retail seller of books. Amazon has an array of books all in which they arrange in categories and subcategories and put them in order with the best sellers on top. So if you want to see whats selling on dogs, go to Amazon.

Once you see a book that is selling really good on Amazon, that means there is a good chance that that book will sell good online too. All you need to do now is check to see how popular the niche really is online.

The tool I use for this job is the Google Adwords Keyword Tool. It will show you just how many people are searching for the keywords you will be using. Jot down on a piece of paper the 5 or so keywords that best describe what your niche represents.

For example, if you decide to do an information product on dog training, dog training would be one keyword phrase. Simply type that into the tool and see how many monthly searches it is getting. If the total combined is over 75,000 searches per month, you for sure have a money market on your hands.

This keyword tool lists not only the number of monthly search results for the keywords you entered, but other keywords that may be similar as well. You can use these other keywords and phrases too when you start adding content to your site.

I hope you have learned just how simple it can be to do market research online. Unfortunately, this is just the first step of making money with an online business. The real work comes with getting traffic to your new site.
