How can you make sure that you are employing a certified drum instructor? How do you know you are becoming a professional?? Here are some tips on what to look out for when you employ a drum teacher. The truth is, there are professed drum instructors and amateur. To find out if your teacher is a professed, a personal interview would be considered. A perfect drum teacher would be one who has a diploma in Music Education with an emphasis on Percussions. But it is still good to be cynical. Experience matters so make sure you find a teacher who is expert in instructing a student. For instance, there are teachers who have no experience teaching young children or a particular genre. In the drum world, there are those teachers who are termed as “cowboys”. These types of drum teachers are commonly unqualified to be drum teachers. Always keep in mind that playing and teaching are two very various things. Amateur drum teachers are also inert in some basic drum knowledge. A very good way of spotting the cowboys from the pros would be to observe some of their drumming techniques. Bad teachers also do not know how to teach proper coordination, wrist movement, thumb and finger grips and pedal work. A basic knowledge of the drums is essential to drummers. So a certified drum teacher must be able to answer casual questions such as "What drum set is right for my 12 year old daughter?”. Aside from basic beats, a very good drum instructor does not only focus on one musical genre but can teach a multitude of other music modes such as jazz, funk, reggae, odd time (unusual time signatures), Latin, fusion, marching and others. Other drum teachers like to name drop, such as the drummer of a well-known band. While this may be true as drum teachers can tour with bands, it would still be nice to find out as much the drum instructor in question. Nonsense drum teachers are not only a rot of your time and money.
