Bonnaroo - The Greatest Destination On Earth
 by: Stephanie Barker

Bonnaroo Arts and Music Festival takes place on a large farm in Manchester, Tennessee. It started in 2002 with a lineup of over 30 bands with over 4 stages, not to mention many vendors and other attractions. It has been appropriately compared to Woodstock.

This farm in Tennessee becomes its own little town. There’s food, shops, a general store, ATMs, police, paramedics. Everything you would need for an entertaining four days is there. There is no reason to leave once you’ve entered, and who would want to?

The amount of music available to see live is awe-inspiring. Although a majority of the sets are taken up by popular jam bands, there truly is something for everybody. From music to comedy to art, there is no lack of things to check out in this mind bending little town.

There is a strong sense of community inside the gates. Everyone is there for the same reason, to unwind and hear some quality music. The campsites take up most of the land where strangers camp alongside each other. The sites are open and people flow in and out of them endlessly meeting, sharing and loving.

It is no surprise to see such a sense of brotherhood in a place like this. Music is a universal language shared by all. It has the power to unite people from all walks of life. If only we could get this kind of love, compassion and brotherhood to flow outside the gates we would be living in a much more peaceful world.

There is one Bonnaroo-goer that is trying to do just that. Through a book, fondly titled, “Ruth Montgomery Writes Again!”, we hope to not only unite the world under the pretext of awareness and relief but we intend to do everything in our power to make some change.

50% of the profits from the book will be donated to third-world charities and will serve as seed money to initiate an ongoing series of concerts to be known as The World Aid Concert Series or affectionately dubbed, The Big Gig.

Let the music live one, let the music unite us and let us do something powerful with our vast numbers! As Eddy Vedder from Pearl Jam said at Bonnaroo ‘08 during his amazing three hour set – all these people can make a difference!
