Building a Homemade Wind Generator
 by: Ira Newman

What can we do ourselves to manage the worldwide energy crisis? Wind and solar power sources should be developed and more efficient use of the power we have is a good beginning.

Wind generator systems are not cheap to build but with the cost of producing power approaching zero a lot of money will be saved in the long run. People have set up wind generators where the wind speed is less than 11 miles per hour. Eleven miles per hour is the ideal wind speed at the site you propose although a slightly lower speed will show good results.

The high initial cost of a wind power system is a major factor that turns people off. Setting up your own wind power solution at home can be done much more inexpensively. There are some important things you need to be aware when you decide to make your own wind generator.

1) Make sure your plans are proven. Understand the power output you need to create.

2) Strong components should be a priority.

3) Compare prices of available parts and use equipment that match your site and budget.

Look for the following features:

1) Drawing and pictures work better than text only instructions.

2) Make sure you guide has easy language. Too much jargon and techspeak makes for a difficult job.

3) The guide you use should have textual and illustrative information on all of the components you will need. It is also important that the guide tells you which type of component works best for a site like yours.

4) Your guide will not be of much help if the information is not specific to your location. Information about building in Europe is not helpful if you are in the U.S. Knowing equipment information about your location is an important feature of your guide.
