Water Fire Extinguisher as Home Safety Device
 by: Brian Ayling

Water fire extinguishers are reliable devices in putting out most types of fires. Home fires as caused by materials like fabric, paper and wood are easily controlled by this equipment. On the contrary, this type of equipment is not recommended in extinguishing fires caused by flammable liquids and gases. Naturally, water is an element, effective against flames, but having water-based equipment does not provide one with absolute guarantees.

Extinguishers come in various types and kinds. There are ones which work best using gas cartridges while others rely heavily on water pressure. The pressurized extinguishers have been in circulation for quite a long period now, making it a work-in-progress. Through the years, firefighters have been reaping the benefits of this wonderful equipment, therefore providing relief to many others. Nowadays, things have changed. And extinguishers have undergone several improvements. For one, the equipment still makes use of cartridges, with its entire cylinder filled with pressurized gas. The ones using this equipment need to hold the hose firmly and direct the water towards the base of the fire. In addition, this equipment has been in use for years now that people like firemen and rescue workers have already perfected the practice of using it against fires.

Water fire extinguishers may have been effective in simpler fire cases but not in grease or electrical fires. Water, as we all know is a conductor, making it dangerous during electrical fires. More so, water’s reaction towards grease and oil is unfavorable that it could cause fires to spread. Some water-based extinguishers also contain certain additives, ones which could help in extinguishing fires. There is potassium acetate, which forms a crust over fires and helps in minimizing potential damage. Even normal detergents are helpful additives, thus preventing combustion at a certain extent. Other types of water-based equipment also make use of physical agents. There is the water and oil emulsion with polymer, which is relatively useful for home and kitchen fires. With regards to maintenance and care, extinguishers should be inspected regularly. This practice will help you ensure that your fire equipment still has adequate pressure. If not used for a long time, recharging your extinguisher is also an option. This equipment should be kept in fire places and not in kitchens where electricity fuels basic appliances. Remember, water-based equipment will not serve you well if used in grease fires or fires in the kitchen. This type of fire equipment is available in different sizes. As expected, larger cylinders are anticipated to handle larger fire incidents. The ones used in the United Kingdom are even painted for identification as well.

In the long run, your choice of fire equipment always begins with a decision. You have to determine your wants and personal needs. Extinguishers, in the process, are common items in offices, buildings and establishments. Slowly, people have started to appreciate the importance of these pressurized and compact cylinders. Choices may vary according to demand but the use and purpose remains the same. Others may feel that fire blankets are the real thing. Some could regard fire blankets as plain and unnecessary items. Several even maintain fire hoses and reels. Whatever the choice may be, our actions speak of our intentions, the same way fire safety speaks of prevention and nothing else.
