Snore No more : Snore No More treatments
 by: Brett Chisholm

Should snoring be treated?

Snore No More recommends that snoring does get treated – the right way. Less than 5% of people have sought help from their doctor for snoring. Snoring can be treated. There are many ways and or procedures you can take but a good place to start is with the snore no more book that cured me - please follow the links to my website more more info. If you are serious about getting further medical treatment then obviously your doctor is the best place to start. Your doctor may suggest a referral to a specialist in sleep disorders.

What tests are available to help your snoring?

A specialist will run tests to examine your chest, heart, blood pressure, nose and throat. A test to investigate snoring or more serious things such as sleep apnea should be undertaken before any treatment. This is called a sleep study and is performed in a special sleep unit in a secluded room. Simple non-invasive equipment is used to measure your sleep and breathing.

- Life style factors: If you are overweight then losing weight can seriously reduce your snoring (it did help me but it did not cure me). Avoiding alcohol a few hours before sleep may also help. If you suffer from allergies such as hay fever, then aviod triggers such as dust, cats and dogs.

- Medical treatments: A number of medical treatments offer varying degrees of success in treating snoring. Long term benefits on some of these are unfounded. Medical treatments include –

* Mandibular Advancement Devices similar to a snore no more mouthpiece. They work to push the jaw forward to make a larger airway. They are not effective for everyone and require fitting by a dentist.

* Nasal CPAP treatment is the best treatment for sleep apnea and is also very effective for snoring. Many people find the mask and pump uncomfortable and inconvenient and you will need to wear the CPAP every night.

* Procedures to stiffen the palate a somewhat radical way but becoming more common. These can involve lasers, microwaves or injections of chemicals that cause scarring of the palate. Some initial results show promise but long term studies have not yet been completed.

* Operations that create larger airways by removing some tissue at the back of the throat, usually called a UPPP, these only work in some people and long term results have been disappointing.

* Operations on the nose may be helpful if nasal blockage causes mouth breathing or airway collapse.

* Laser operations of the throat, another radical treatment. Usually called LAUP, it may work for some but long term success has not been measured. The operation may be painful and is done by an ENT surgeon.

* Operations on the tongue or palate may be recommended where these are the cause of an abnormally small airway.

* Tonsillectomy is a common operation for snoring children and is often effective. In adults with large tonsils it may also help.
