Making the Transition from Inkjet to Laser Printing
 by: Robert Hearns

Laser printers are probably the most reliable among the printers available in the market these days. Compared to inkjet printers, they have less moving parts, and are, therefore, sturdier. Moreover, most brands offer repair services that even extend beyond the warranty period.

Generally, inkjet printing is perceived to be cheaper than laser printing. Further analysis, though, suggests otherwise. While inkjet printers can be availed of at low prices, buyers later realize that replacement cartridges are not exactly cheap nor are they cost effective. Could laser printing, then, be the wiser alternative? Personally, there are two issues about laser printing that initially did not sit well with me:

SIZE – laser printers employ heating as part of the printing procedure, hence machines require a large shell to allow more room for air circulation to easily cool the machine down.

TONER COST – they are quite pricey so cash out is higher; I do realize that toners do have a higher printing yield and so they actually last longer

Laser Printer Prices

You would be pleased to know that personal laser toner printers are actually very affordable. They are far different from the inkjet line, both in look and performance. My advice on buying laser printers is to look for models with replacement toners that are budget friendly. You also might want to consider the cheaper but equally reliable compatible replacement toners that are widely available online. Prices may vary depending on the make and model of your printer.

Compatible Replacement Toners

Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Cartridges – as the name suggest, are replacement toner cartridges that are made by the printer manufacturers. These are the priciest among the lot. One cannot help but conclude that these cartridges are meant to recover for the companies' losses on their low-priced printers.

A perfect alternative to OEM’s are third-party manufactured “compatible cartridges”; these are new cartridges made according to the specifications of the printer manufacturer, hence the quality is generally excellent. The good news is they are cheaper, usually costing less than half the price of an OEM item.

Then there are the remanufactured cartridges; different from compatible cartridges as they are used OEM cartridges that have been refilled and refurbished to work like new. Reputable toner refillers clean and recheck the cartridges for quality before they are sold. Remanufactured cartridges are environmentally-friendly; many organizations now offer incentives for the return of used laser cartridges.

Advantages of Laser Printing

Laser printing allows you more prints than inkjet; other laser printers even have settings that can maximize the yield of your toner cartridge thereby giving you more than the usual number of prints. The quality that these printers offer is second to none. While purchasing a new laser printer might require one to shell out a few extra dollars, the rewards and benefits of having one far outweigh the disadvantages and are guaranteed to pay off eventually.
